Terrington St Clement Community School

A traditional school with traditional values where

we aspire, succeed and thrive

Parent Information Phonics

We aim to develop the full potential of all our learners as confident, literate readers and writers. If learners are to develop as competent readers and writers, it is vitally important that they have a secure understanding of the letter sounds and spelling system of the English language. Phonic skills need to be developed in a systematic way, based on a stage approach.

Learners begin their phonics journey in nursery where they explore: environmental sounds; instrumental sounds, rhyme and rhythm; body percussion; voice sounds; alliteration; oral blending and segmenting; before beginning the ELS Phonics programme followed by the rest of the school.

Our Reception learners will follow the ELS Phonics programme which allows us to deliver a rigorous phonics curriculum. This begins at the start of the reception year and learners will build their phonics skills moving through Phases 2, 3, and 5. Learners will apply these skills on a daily basis in both adult-led tasks and in their independent activities.

By the time learners leave Reception they will be expected to:

Word Reading

  • Say a sound for each letter in the alphabet and at least 10 digraphs;
  • Read words consistent with their phonics knowledge by sound-blending;
  • Read aloud simple sentences and books that are consistent with their phonic knowledge, including some common exception words.

Writing

  • Write recognisable letters, most of which are correctly formed;
  • Spell words by identifying sounds in them and representing the sound with a letter or letters;
  • Write simple phrases and sentences that can be read by others
  • Fine Motor skills - hold a pencil effectively in preparation for fluent writing using the tripod grip in almost all cases.
